Steroids in High School Sports

Excelling in sports is estimable for high school students since they are able to show their talent to their peers and family. It is more admirable if the individual can perform better than others in the sport since it improves their success in sports career. Some kids engage in the schools’ sports to achieve fame. However, this has led encouraged some students to use steroids to boost their performance in the field. The following discussion analyzes the issue of Steroids in High School Sports to determine ways it can be solved.

One of the most used drugs is anabolic steroids which is available as a prescription drug. Although the drugs are under controlled substances, they are still abused in the society by people who want to boost their performance. Anabolic means that the drug can be used for bodybuilding since they help in muscle building (Petróczi, Mazanov & Naughton 3). That said, the drug is not similar to other forms of steroids commonly used for medication for diseases such as asthma. Despite their widely used the drug cannot enhance an individual skills or agility. Steroids are composed of chemical components of testosterone which is naturally produced in the male hormones (Rasmussen et al.). The drugs have crucial medical use since they can treat diseases, however, there use must be monitored due to their extreme side effects in the body.

Steroids use without a prescription is harmful to the body and may cause irreversible health effects on the user. Use of steroids has been related to blood clots, bowel problems, stroke, and cholesterol problem (Salzman). What is more, the drug is a sex hormone hence it can interfere with the individual characteristics since they are controlled by hormones produced by the body. This causes hyper-masculinity for boys. Steroids can cause breast development in young men. In addition, the drug also affects the user minds which may lead to aggressive behavior, mood swings, and irritability, which may lead to criminal behavior (Crane).

There is little information on the number of high school athletes who use the drug since is it is illegal. Athletic associations such as National Football League have banned the use of the drug by athletes in the field. The league authorities carry out steroids text on the athletes to ensure that they have complied with the directive (Rasmussen et al.). It has been difficult for the league authorities to the use of the drug for high school students in sports. Parents or guardians who have kids engaging in high sports have been often been called by school management since their kids have tested positive for the drug. The main reason why it is difficult to control doping in sports is because that programs implemented are ineffective (Petróczi, Mazanov & Naughton 10). They do not deal with the physiological aspects that encourage the behavior among athletes.

Most programs implemented to prevent doping discourage players from using the drugs by informing them of the health effects of the drug and sanctioning those who use the drugs. The objective is to promote fair play in high school sports by ensuring that no one is using stimuli to boost performance in sports. Anti-doping programs also deter the use of the drug by citing the moral and ethical issues of using the drugs (Hanson, Glen, & Annette 51). Some of the athletes who have opened up about their use of the drug argue that that the pressure to perform better in field encouraged them to use the drugs. Others site peer pressure, where the teammates or friends suggest the drug since they believe that it boosts their confidence and performance in major games. There is a major gap between athletes’ perception of steroids and the facts of the drugs. This shows that they have little knowledge of the drug. Some of the athletes consider steroids and doping as part of the game. Others use the drug to experiment it and see how it will affect them in their performance (Salzman).

High school athlete have little information of what may contain performance boosting drug hence many times they find themselves victims due to lack of knowledge. Some food supplements used by athletes to boost they physical strength especially if the sports require a lot of body strength have been a major debate in the society (Rasmussen et al.). This is because some people argue that they should be banned since they are a form of doping. The main issue is if the use of prohibited substances can be related to substance abuse or nutritional supplements. When one becomes a professional athlete, he or she must watch the food consumed. Most of the diet athlete consumer consist of supplement to boost they body function such as recovery (Hanson, Glen, & Annette 217). That said, some argue that steroids should be considered as a food supplement since it has a similar use as other food nutrition used by athletes. The social view of a drug heavily influences it to use in the society. If a society does not address the causes of a behavior and seeks to address the symptoms, then it will end up failing to control the use of the illicit drug. Social projection contributes to False Consensus Effect (FCE) where an individual who show a certain behavior tend to think that many people in the society also engage in the behavior (Petróczi, Mazanov & Naughton 4). What is more, they use FCE to justify their actions by arguing that many people are using steroids in the school games.

Use of steroids to boost performance in sports started many years ago hence it is not a new phenomenon in the society. Use of steroids was at its peak in the 80s where athlete considered the drug as a necessity. The major challenge for the authorities during this period was that they could not determine who had used the drug since there was no advanced medical technology (Hanson, Glen, & Annette 154). They took the drug to experiment it since they knew that it impossible to be caught. The issue was addressed through massive education where people were educated about the dangers of the drug. In addition, players’ blood pressure was examined before games to determine if they had used the drug. Currently, high school athletes find challenging to avoid the drug consumption since some of the some of the food supplements available in the stores contain steroids. Unlike other illicit drugs, steroids is used to boost the physic of the user. High school sports players are prone to the drug use since they may be eying to join college sports (Harris 83). Coaches or parents may encourage the high school kids to use the drug since they believe that for one to join college-level games, he or she must be strong and big.

Ease of access to steroids without a prescription has increased high school students vulnerability to the drug. Studies show that most of steroids drugs are bought through an online platform. Steroids is commonly referred as “the juice” in the society. Some of the athlete superstars have used the drug. These athletes are role models to high school kids who want to progress in sports career. This increases the temptation to use the drug since the kids want to achieve what their role models have achieved by using what they used to achieve their success (Petróczi, Mazanov & Naughton 6). The model of education has also been criticized since it tends to show the future effects of steroids. For instance, showing people the effects of smoking through images of affected lungs of a long time smoker may not stop them from smoking. This is because they do not believe that such a thing can happen to them due to the time it takes for the side effects to show (Harris 183). The education program needs to provide information on the immediate danger of the drug on the users.

Most drugs are abused since they work and the individual can feel changes in their body. This is also true for steroids since they are effective in improving the physic of the user. The drug work quickly and with ease since the user can start noticing changes within few weeks of using the drugs. Steroids may be used to reduce the level of fat and increase muscles which are attractive for the high school students (Harris 128). However, it is difficult to determine how an individual body will react to the drugs ones ingested. In addition, some suppliers of drug lie about the content of the drug. The kid may purchase the drug thinking that its steroids but it is not. This mostly happens in a black market where dealers want to make more money. If they have sold all their steroids, they may decide to sell other forms of drugs and lie that its steroids (Crane). This is a major health risk in the society since the user does not know what he or she is really using.

Steroids use can be controlled in high school by educating or recommending the appropriate diet and lifestyle for those who want to increase their body size. There are other healthy channels that people can use to increase their strength and size to enhance their performance and increase their chances of getting in college-level sports. High school trainer plays a major role in shaping the kids’ behavior, hence they should be engaged in the education process (Crane). The coaches should inform the kids about the dangers of steroids and healthy ways that they can use improve in sports. At the beginning of the campaign against the use of steroids, people were being cautioned against using the drug due by claiming that they do not work. However, this narrative was changed to they work, but they have negative health consequences on the users. High school kids need to be informed of all the facts about steroids. The facts are that if the drug is used based on the medical prescription it can be safe to use to treat illnesses such as pain. The second fact is steroids are harmful if used in excess just as drugs in the society. The final fact is that the use of the drug is cheating since it provides an unfair advantage to those using it in sports (Hanson, Glen, & Annette 76).

Steroids use without a prescription is harmful to the body and may cause irreversible health effects on the user. Use of steroids has been related to blood clots, bowel problems, stroke, and cholesterol problem (Rasmussen et al.).

The government stepped to control the issue of steroids abuse by making the sale, use, and possession of the drug without prescription illegal. Possession of the drug illegally attracts a one year incarceration or $1000 fine if the individual is a first-time offender. States have also implemented laws that help in fighting the use of the drug in the society (Harris 232). For instance, the state of Virginia has law legitimizing student drug testing a method of school prevention program.

In conclusion, steroids use in high school sports is a key concern in the society. The availability of the drug without a prescription has increased its use in the society. The user of the drug faces major health risks for using steroids. Steroids use can be controlled through education and address the issue that causes the behavior for high school kids. The education program should include facts about the drug, immediate health risks, and other healthy methods that the students can use to improve performance such as nutritio
